- Zurich is a city that seems to have everything, and even in twenty-four hours I was able to enjoy the lake, the river, the beautiful old churches, the cafes and restaurants. It is well worth a visit.

- Fribourg—Freiburg in German—sits at the ‘border’ between French Switzerland and German Switzerland. This is a small, unusual and interesting town that manages effectively to (as its official tourist brochure proudly proclaims) “live up the differences”.

- Though I’ve written trip journals for Geneva, Lausanne and Bern, Western Switzerland has its share of places that lie outside cities. There are châteaux, picturesque villages, mountains—all fairly easily accessible as day trips from cities like Lausanne or Bern. Here are some we liked.

- We explored Western Switzerland on day trips from Lausanne. Lausanne itself, with its churches and museums (and what a lot of those there are!)—and the picturesque Lac Leman—proved to be an interesting, historic and pretty town. In fact, we ended up liking this lovely city a lot.

- According to the official Geneva Web site, the city’s home to over 200 international organisations. In about five hours, we saw a Russian Church and an English garden; dined at a café where we were served by an Indian, and went past another where Bill Clinton dined. Cosmopolitan? You bet.

- I look down, and the manhole cover has a bear embossed on it. I look up, and the yellow flags along the street have big black bears. A nearby fountain’s topped by a statue of a bear dressed in armour. Welcome to Bern, the city of the bear.

- If Switzerland makes you think of majestic mountain peaks, glaciers, the clunking of cowbells, hiking alpine trails, and magnificent views over the valleys, then seek out a place you've probably never heard of --- Bettmeralp, the better alp! It'll fulfill nearly all your most pleasant stereotypes about the Swiss Alps.

- Time for another weekend break, and this time somewhere a little off the beaten city break track.
