Bergen is the standard starting and ending point for the Norwegian Fjord cruise aboard the Hurtigruten (the Norwegian coastal ferry). We spent some time in Bergen both before and after our cruise. Bergen, Norway's second largest city (pop. 250,000) has an international airport.

Quick overview of Bergen, this was the start of my "no plans" vacation in Scandinavia. All I had was 7 nights to get from Bergen to Stockholm and catch my flight home.

Nestled between seven hills and several fjords, at first glance Bergen resembles an oversized version of the beautiful fjord towns that cling to the most improbable and isolated places. This impression is only partially accurate - it also possesses an exceptional number of superb museums for a city its size.

Bergen has a spectacular setting among seven hills and is one of the norways most lively cities. It is also considered to be the rainiest place in all of Norway... (not to miss the shops selling canned boxes of `bergen rain':P)

It is not true that it rains all the time. I have been three times and twice there was warm sun. The other time is better forgotten, particularly as it was a Monday afternoon but when it is fine, the outdoor attractios are terrific.
