How lucky I was to have two Italian friends take me to Lucca for the day. The infamous walled city, probably the only one that exists in italy now. It was truly a beautiful day.

Lucca is a wonderfully designed medieval city that still has its original walls. There are magnificent and colorful churches, as well as the ruins of a large amphitheater that now has houses on it.

We wanted an inexpensive getaway for our family (grandparents, parents, siblings etc) - altogether 12 persons. On Vacationhouses.com we found a large Villa and we flew with Ryanair (www.ryanair.com) for EUR 20/person roundtrip from Lübeck/Germany to Milan.

Small and quiet, Lucca is walled in town about half an hour from Pisa. Today the walls play an important part in town life, shielding the streets of the center from traffic and creating a ring of green around them.
