Nepal is a land of incredible contrasts, where life imitates the landscape. The gulf between rich and poor is reflected in the contrast between the 5-mile peaks of the Himalaya in the north and the tropical forests of the southern Terai plains, an area boasting one of Asia’s best wildlife experiences.

Talk to anyone about a trip to Nepal and the focus turns to treks through exhilarating mountain panoramas and visions of exhausting uphill battles, smelly feet and thermal underwear. True, Nepal is a "Mecca for trekkers", but it also shelters a cultural landscape as diverse as any on the planet.

Kathmandu is big, but the region of most interest is the old town. This is where the city was born and where you will find Kathmandu's soul. Surrounding Durbar (palace) Square are the ancient marketplaces, linked by a narrow street that marked the start of the trade route to Tibet.

I can't believe I'm already back in Singapore. I waited to go to Nepal for so long and my trip is now over. I had the most amazing time there- i had the experience of a lifetime as I went up to a little village called Chiang Sing near The Last Resort, which is situated near the Bhote Khosi River. I learnt a little more Nepali this time round and tried more local dishes. I miss the people there- all the kids in the village, the guides at The Last Resort, and lots of other people. Besides me getting a flu virus for 36 hours, I had the best time of my life... See some more of my pictures: http://photos.yahoo.com/ayayababoon

The Nepal Himalayas are known as the 'Kingdom of the Gods'. Pokhra is the starting point of many treks in western Nepal. This was a trip I undertook with a friend of mine, Anurag Nautiyal (Nauty, for short) in October 1998. This was meant to be one of those "have worked hard for my money, now I need to enjoy it" trips - and it was.
