In Moldovan standards, it is a metropolitan city, housing some 25% of the whole population, though to someone coming from a big city, Chişinău may rather look like a provincial city. It can be visited on a half-day walking tour.

There is little that can be charachterised as being “more” typical Romanian than the monasteries of Northern Moldova, or Bucovina, as it is more often referred to. Churches wholly painted on the exterior of their walls are little represented elsewhere, if at all.

At the outskirts of Târgu Neamţ, a trail goes up the hill to the Cetatea Neamţului – the German’s Borough. The area has been inhabited by the German Teutonic Order or the Saxons from Transilvania for centuries, thus giving later the names of the river and to the cities nearby.
