Mauritania had never been on my 'must visit' list. Neither had travelling in pain, and sometimes delirious with a raging fever, ever been on my 'must do' list. By accident, the two coincided and it was for me, a whole new experience. I had a great time.

Nine hours on the collective van from Atar have made the lights of Nouakchott a welcome sight. Banks that don't open, goats decaying in the streets, monolithic mosques, and money changers everywhere are some of the things you can expect to see. But Nouakchott also has its relaxing oases...

I visited Nouakchott, Mauritania, with three friends while living in Dakar, Senegal. Great short trip, VERY friendly city residents, good foreign experience and great places to shop.
