- Malta has always been on my list of places to visit, but we never got there. When my husband had a work conference there we jumped at the opportunity to visit the island for ourselves. My daughter and I met him for the weekend after his conference.

- Solemnity, calm and dignity speak from the stones of the monastic buildings that line the narrow medieval streets of Mdina. Perched elegantly on a hill from where numerous villages are clearly visible, Mdina is a citadel that encloses within its walls a diverse mixture of conventual buildings and Baroque showpieces.

- If you like history, you'll love Malta. The Ancients, the Phoenicians, the Arabs, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Ottoman Turks, the Crusader Knights, the French, and the British have all left their mark here. My wife and I visited the island for a week in early March.

- We had heard mixed comments about Malta, but the travel agents were offering a good deal for 1 week of guaranteed sunshine. Love it or hate it, we were on our way.

- Valletta is Malta's capital, former home of the Knights of St.John and later used by the colonial British forces as an administrative centre. Valletta's historic buildings, churches, museums, auberges and residential homes form a unique ensemble that echoes the history of Malta's last 400 years.

- Where is the oldest building dedicated to worship located? Where did the Knights of St. John defeat the invading Moslems, saving Europe? Where did more bombs fall per square foot during WWII than anywhere else in the world? The Answer is MALTA.

- Malta is a small island a few hundred kilometers south of Italy and a stone's throw away from North Africa. Its wind-swept landscapes and ancient towns make it a unique and mystical place to visit, and it houses some of the oldest known ruins in the world.

- Malta was perhaps the most unexpected pleasure of my six-week romp through the Mediterranean this summer. I went with little preconceived notion and left with a fascination and respect of this little island state.
