Guilin is large with grand sights, but feels like a small town. The Li cuts through it, and combined with the parks feels wide open.

A last minute substitute for a planned cruise of the Yangtze River, Guilin was a phenomenal second choice. In fact, the Li River cruise gave us scenes in 4 hours that you wouldn't get on a four day Yangtze tour.

I went to Longji Terrace two weeks ago. The terraces are absolutely incredible, they are all located on mountains which are over 700 meters high. When I was in the shuttle bus which sent us to the start point I could see the deep valleys are just beside us...

This was actually an 8-day trip covering major cities in the Kwangsi and Guong Dong provinces in southern China. I dreaded going with package and guided tours, but this trip proved this unnecessary, as it is more relaxed and accommodating that way.

Though I visited China many years ago, Guilin remained fixed in my memory as one of the beautiful places in China. It is as I imagine China would look like, as depicted in many a famous brushstroke paintings.

The principal reason for visiting Guilin is a trip on the Li river. One travels slowly, on a barge pulled by a tug boat to see the wondrous lime stone structures the wind carved over the eons.
