- We wanted to visit Lyon for the history. We had heard that it was France's first "First City." It made my first trip to France most memorable. I can't wait to go back. I might even skip Paris next time.

- Ideal place for a short break. Enough Euro institutions to ensure lots of expensive leisure, but good museums, architecture, and culture for budget travellers as well.

- If you live to eat rather than eat to live, then France's third city is the place for you. With more restaurants per square meter than any other place on earth, it's a gourmet's paradise.

- There is a controversy about whether Lyon or Marseille is really France's "Second City." I vote for Lyon. It is well-located for day-trips and has much to offer on its own.
