Colonia is all very low-key but there are some nice historic places to stay in town and some more modern hotels outside the centre. Restaurants are not hard to find but the cuisine is generally unimaginative although the location and ambiance can be excellent.

This tiny town with a huge history is ideal for a day or a weekend away from the urban clutter of Buenos Aires or Montevideo. There are several specific attractions detailed in this journal but the real charm of Colonia is wandering and finding you own special place.

Colonia is a small town on the eastern side of Rio de la Plata. Once a center of Portguese smuggling operations, it is now an attractive old colonial town, well worth visiting for its setting, museums, and friendly people.

Colonia is a beautiful 17th-century colonial town just across the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires. The historic district has been very well preserved. It's a great place to spend a night or two and relax after the excitement of Buenos Aires.

This gorgeous, quiet little town is usually the destination of travellers in Buenos Aires who have to leave Argentina to get their passports re-stamped, but Colonia is well worth a visit for any traveller.
