- My father lives in a care facility in tiny Gates, Oregon. As age-related dementia claims his mind and body, his children make short visits that limit his confusion. My brother and I used Salem as base camp for exploring the triangle between Portland, Salem, and east to Detroit Lake.

- Bush Park is 90.5 acres of rolling open meadows, tree copses, a creek, two Victorian era homes-cum-museums (with greenhouses), flower beds, rose garden, flowering shrubs, art gallery, lighted tennis courts, and many recreational features. It hosts a number of events throughout the year.

- Salem, Oregon’s capital, sharing a border with Keizer to its north, offers governmental and historical sites, but also festivals and parks. 45 miles south of downtown Portland, they are conveniently located for excursions into the greater Willamette Valley.

- During our summer road tour of the Pacific Northwest, we spent a night in Salem and then took the back roads north to Portland the next day, passing dozens wineries and stopping at several along the way.

- The Capital of Oregon, Salem is the home of Willamette University, the Oregon State Fair, historical homes, orchards, gardens and wineries.
