- Kazakhstan often gets a bad rap--there are even travel books out there that disparage it! I'm here to tell you that it just isn't true! Almaty is an up-and-coming city that has a lot to offer, from hiking and skiing in the beautiful mountains to fine-dining downtown.

- Kazakhstan is the ninth biggest country in world yet no one seems to have a clue where it is. It was part of the former soviet union and lies between china and russia!! They speak Russian and Kazakh and most of the young people speak English.Tours are non existant and i only got to the Charyn Canyon because a Kazakh friend of mine organised it for me!!
Almaty is a pretty city with tree lined avenues on a grid system, therefore it is easy enough to get around. It is at the foothills of the Chimbaluk Mountains so there is plenty of scope for hillwalking during the summer and at winter time it is a ski resort!

- My work in Almaty (look at www.ecotourism.kz for more info) takes me around the country. There is much to do in the city and nearby. These brief diaries aim to give a flavour of what is on offer.

- Working in the Ecotourism Information Resource Centre in Almaty takes me to many places. My first trip was to Karkaraly. It was a slow, hot train ride, followed by a slow, cold car journey across the bleak deserted steppe. We were met with tea and smiles, those universal symbols of welcome.

- Almaty, the old capital of Kazakhstan (now Astana), is a lush, green city which is rapidly emerging from the throws of its drastic change from communism to capitalism.
