- Launceston castle dominates the skyline in this sleepy Cornish town. Built to defend the 12th-century main route into Cornwall and act as permanent seat for the Cornish earls, it has had a chequered history and has undergone much rebuilding throughout its active 500-hundred-year history.

- Mevagissey is the quintessential Cornish fishing village, ranking alongside Polperro and Cadgwith for sheer, timeless beauty. Its residents' income now largely rests with the thronging tourists, but its working harbour is still a mecca for photographers from all around the world.

- Hubby thought I needed to experience the English "holiday camp" of his childhood, so we were off with the in-laws to Haven Perran Sands, just south of Newquay.

- With Cornwall being such a remote and rural county, it is difficult to believe that it has a cathedral city in Truro, second only to Wells in Somerset as England's smallest. I took a wander around this charming old cobbled city on a sunny May day.

- Although Cornwall is well populated with beautiful gardens, none can compare with Trelissick. Its superb position on the mild Roseland Peninsula, bordering the Fal River, sets it apart from the rest. Subtropical vegetation is the order of the day here in the UK's most equable climate.
