Salem plays up its tragic history of 1626, when 19 innocent people were killed for witchcraft. However, as we found out, Salem has a whole lot more to offer than witches.

On our swing through Massachusetts in search of ancestors, we headed north to Salem. This time we were seeking Susannah, the witch. We also visited the House of the Seven Gables and did a little shopping for eye of newt.

I have visited Salem about four times and love the feel of the city and the warmth of the people who live there. There is so much to see about its history, from the Salem Witchcraft Trials to Nathaniel Hawthorne exhibits and the old cemetery that is so interesting.

Vacationing in New England, Salem was an easy Boston side trip. Places of interest are clearly marked, so we picked two that looked appealing and, because it was a blustery day, indoors. Both sites fit Salem’s witch theme but were of the historic variety, not the witches-on-a-broomstick kind or new-age Wiccan type.
