El Calafate is charming, but it is also one the most expensive destinations in Argentina, together with Las Leñas (Mendoza). Although you can find a double standard room for 40 dollars per night (Albergue del Glaciar Pioneros), eating is expensive. A cup of coffee with 2 croissants costs 3 dollars.

I visited this city when it was a village of 3,000 inhabitants. Today it has seven times that population. However, it still conserves its village atmosphere, and a walk through the town is really enjoyable. Today it is full of modern shops, with all sorts of products, including marble handcrafts…

My three trips to El Calafate were really thrilling. It is difficult to describe in words seeing a 20 mile long glacier with huge chunks of ice falling into the lake, preeded by a roaring noise. I was here in 1970, in 2001 and now (December 2006)
