During “those . . . crazy days of summer,” some folks head for the beach. I stay in the cool car, drive shady Mountain State roads, and tour museums on the new West Virgina Civil War Heritage Trail. First outing: Philippi, site of the first land battle.

When the men-folk go off in search of adventure, the modern-day Penelope doesn’t sit spinning by the hearth, patiently awaiting their return. No, she heads off on her own Odyssey. Mine took me to neighboring West Virginia, along country roads to a charming place called Philippi.
