San Jose, CA was the location for this year's US Youth Soccer's Workshop. Five days of educational seminars, networking opportunities and soccer! Not much time for local attractions so this mostly covers dining options near the convention center.

When I returned to the Bay Area for some brief R&R, the Egyptian Museum was a must on the agenda. The city is reinventing itself after the devastating dot-com bust; it is vibrant, upbeat, and still the address for eBay, Google, and the très chic Santana Row.

Kevin and I have moved away from San Jose for ease of getting to our respective jobs elsewhere in the Bay Area. But we still need to visit the city. Recently we spent a few weekends there on convention business.

The Silicon Valley is home to a number of different ethnic groups, and subgroups within groups. One of the benefits of such diversity is the food. Here's a review of some of my favorite dining spots.

Chuck is very much at home here in San Jose. We had another chance to visit together after our stay in San Diego's travel conference for IgoUgo. Silicon Valley's capital was drenched in rain, but the hills were verdant. Got to sample new flavors.

I spend getting on for half the year in the San José area so I know the area quite well. What is more I have had to make a study of tourist attractions as part of my involvement in staging the 2002 World Science Fiction Convention (ConJosé) in the city.

PEOPLE-WATCHING!! Yes, my friends, Downtown San Jose is a constantly changing place. 25 years ago it was a porno district, but now it is a hot-spot again (well, almost) and definitely a neighborhood worth infiltrating. From epicurean eateries to bottom-of-the-barrel dives, from bad public art to historic landmarks, the neighborhood is the best spot in San Jose to people-watch.

Halloween in California

I'm back in California again, staying with my good friend Kevin Standlee. I spend a lot of time in the San Francisco Bay Area, and there is far too much here to cover in one journal. However, you will get to see the area from the point of view of someone who is almost a resident rather than just a tourist. It is the season of ghouls and ghosts, and America goes crazy on Halloween. But our biggest horror story is house hunting. Visiting here is great, but actually living here is pretty tough unless you have a good salary. For those of you who have been following this as it grew, it is done now. I promise that in future I won't post journals until they are finished.
