- I'd been wanting to visit Bulgaria since reading an article a couple years back in a travel magazine. I had a little less than a week available, but figured I could see some of the highlights, particularly its famous Medieval monasteries. - I first visited Sofia in 1997, and found it overrated. It is comparable to Bucharest - you are bound to spend some time here, but don't plan to make it a long time!

- Near the boarder with Romania, this hilly, elegant Bulgarian town is a delight. I visited for the first time in July 1997, and loved the slow pace, beautiful buildings, and relaxed atmosphere here.

- This place is a unique, living museum of a town. It lives, breathes, and exudes history from all corners. Important in the history of Bulgaria as it is, the town is now an idyllic backwater in Thrace.
