A day at Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.

The Victoria Falls is well known as Mosi-oa-thunya, the Smoke that thunders. Evidence of this can be seen from an aircraft, but it hardly prepares a visitor for what is in store. A roaring sound can be heard on approaching the Mai falls.

I didn't actually take this trip to Zimbabwe (Victoria Falls), but I gave it to my daughter and her husband. They're missionaries in South Africa and I felt they really needed a break. What a great surprise for them!

The township was a little intimidating but did not stop me from walking from the hotel to the shops or markets. There was a tourist office in town where you can book whitewater rafting, bungee jumping, flight, and game driving to begin with.

A chance booking that allowed us to visit the Falls and book up for white water rafting! We must be British and brave. The locals are very friendly and despite the horrible and very realistic news we're hearing from Zim we had no problems and had a great time.

Out of nowhere, the enormous spume from the falls envelopes everything in its proximity, creating a mini-oasis in the otherwise arid desert. Despite the poverty endured, the hospitality extended to us was fantastic. Our only regret was that we didn't explore more of this fantastic country.

"Victoria Falls are the most transcendentally beautiful phenomenon on this side of paradise." -- Selous.
"Scenes so lovely must have been gazed by angels in their flight." --Livington.
The Falls were previously known as Mosi-on-Tunya, or "the thundering smoke".

Zimbabwe is such a beautiful country, packed with charming, welcoming people with much to offer. Put it on your wishlist, if not now, then certainly once its troubles are calmed - obviously Vic Falls, but also Great Zimbabwe, Harare, the Eastern Highlands, the national parks...

Victoria Falls is known as the land of thundering smoke. The City of Victoria Falls exists for the tourists who come to see the Falls. The tourists these days are few but those who come are welcomed and appreciated.
