- For me, no other town in Spain so encapsulates the past as Toledo does. It is one of my favourite cities without a doubt.

- Toledo, Spain, a city that is itself a castle, fits my vision of what
fortified cites in the middle ages must have looked like. If you close your eyes
you can hear the clopping of horse hooves and the the far off war cries of
knights.

- This medieval city sits atop a hill over the river Tagus. Famous for its swords and for being the home of the painter El Greco, Toledo's history is very rich, including sad memories of the Civil War. Because of the legacy of three major religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) in its architecture, Toledo was declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986.

- Through the arid landscape of Don Quixote's La Mancha, we motored north to Toledo. Toledo is situated on a granite hilltop, surrounded by a loop of the Tagus River. More people visit Toledo than any other Spanish town.

- The charming town of Toledo, Spain, brings medieval Europe to the 21st century. You are transported back in time to when kings and queens ruled Spain and the city walls protected you from invading armies.

- The Parador experience was enough to keep us satisfied in Toledo for 2 nights. Perched on the southern bank of the Tajo River, the Parador afforded the best city-wide views anytime of the day. It seemed as if everyone else had avoided Toledo in the unnatural 35°C heat wave.

- This is a beguiling place. 'Can it be done in a day?' people ask. Possibly - but what a disaster! It is at its best in the peace of the evening when the tourist buses and daytrippers have gone - and you can just walk without bothering where.

- After driving through the "plains of Spain", Toledo offered a welcome retreat! Although we first planned it as a day trip, we decided to extend our "day" into a weekend!
