Kaunas, Lithuania's second city, served as the country's provisional capital (while Vilnius was under Polish occupation) between the wars. In this time and afterwards, it developed a truly unique collection of museums to go along with its charming old town.

Former provisional capital, Kaunas is a river port where present day buildings were amalgamated with the historical character of the Old Town. Destroyed extensively by war, it still preserves a wealth of medieval monuments mostly concentrated within the westernmost tip of land which is bordered by Lithuania's two biggest rivers.
