Barbados is a charming island that attracts a very international crowd. Thankfully it's less commercial than many Caribbean destinations. Its southeastern coast is virtually ignored by tourists, yet boasts fabulous beaches, many of which I consider to be the most beautiful in the Caribbean!

Moments after stepping off the plane in Barbados, my five senses were liberated. Aquamarine seas, caressing breezes, heady fragrances, lilting voices, and a delicious tropical cuisine welcomed this sensory-deprived winter refugee.

In the year 1536, Portuguese sailors stumbled upon a tiny (20 miles x 15 miles), uninhabited island while searching for Brazil. They did not establish any settlement at that time, but in 1625 the island was claimed by the British, and in 1627 settlement began.
