Poland's Tragic History Reflected in a Single City

Created by Owen Lipsett on December 3, 2004

Zamosc was built in the late 16th century to be Poland's "ideal city". Sadly, its beautifully preserved Italian Renaissance Old Town is now encircled by reminders of Poland's subsequent history of foreign domination, although, like the country as a whole, it has begun to reawaken.

Zamosc is a jewel of a town, planned and built in one go over 400 years ago. Substantially unaltered since then, it remains a beautiful, late medieval entity. It has been part of many different countries over the years, and is now in Poland, near the boarder with Ukraine.
