- Columbus, GA is an hour south of Atlanta. Founded in 1828, Columbus’s history is tied to the Chattahoochee River, which was the town’s lifeline until the railroad expansion.
Today Fort Benning, home to the U.S. infantry, employs over 30,000 people in the Columbus area, making it the area's largest employer.
