Driving along highway 40 a.k.a. Kananaskis Trail is a wonderful experience to see the spectacular Rockies, amazing geological formations and unforgatable vistas. You may begin your driving from the north, Trans Canada Highway No. 1 or from the south from Highwood House or in the middle from Smith -Dorrien Trail. This section is 105 km long. The best time to drive from the south is in the morning hours and in afternoon from the north because of the sun position. Driving direction will help you enjoy the spectacular scenery and it is the best opportunity to take oustanding pictures. My favorite area in the Kananaskis Country is near Highwood Pass (2220 meters) located 60 km south of Trans Canada Highway No. 1.While driving there you might be lucky to spot spectacular cloud formations known as ALTOSTRATUS.These middle clouds, ALTOSTRATUS, are readily reformed by winds into large and lens-shaped lenticularis. Sometimes tourists misidentify them as a flying saucer. During winter time section of Highway 40 is closed from the Kananaskis Provincial Park (turn to lakes) access road south to Highwood Junction from December to June depending on weather condition. This road closure helps protect wintering wildlife in the area. and prevents travel on a section of road which can be extremely dangerous during the winter.Close
