We chose to stay on the west side of Germany to be able to also see Holland, Belgium, and Luxembourg during our week stay. We rented a car for three days and drove all over Germany and saw the countryside, castles, etc, and then took the train to Holland for the day and went to the little fishing village of Voldendam.
The next day we took the train to Belgium and saw Amsterdam, and the next day took the train to Luxembourg. We were on the go constantly 12-16 hrs a day but wanted to see as much as possible. We bought the Benulux train pass for a week so we could hop on and off in four countries and that was well worth it.
Before we left the states we bought museum passes and that was probably a waste of money since most museums are free and the ones that weren't didn't add up to the amount we payed for the pass. We should have learned alittle better German so we wouldn't have had to reach for the translation book so much but people were very understanding and some spoke broken English for us.
The trip was great and we plan on visiting more countries in the near future.
