Our favorite side trips were our visits to the Aransas Wildlife Refuge. The drive took us a little less than an hour, each way, but we always found that it was well worth the trip. We would see different wildlife each time we visited. One day we would see mainly wild hogs and a number of varieties of birds. Another day we might mainly see deer and wild turkeys. We made five visits to the Refuge; four by car and one by boat. In order to see the whooping cranes up close, the boat trip is mandatory. We highly recommend that anyone interested in wildlife, especially birds, visit the Aransas Wildlife Refuge. Close

Located on S. Alister in Port Aransas, this is a must see (and experience) candy store. There were bins and bins of all kinds of candy, some I haven't seen since I was a kid. The freshly-made caramel with pecans is to die for. There is also freshly-made fudge that looked wonderful, but we were hung up on the caramel.
MUST SEE: The live rattlesnake at the back of the shop. And I do mean LIVE. Have no fear, however, it is in a locked glass cage.
We loved this little shop so much that we made a second trip to restock. Enjoy.
