Morning at The Little Island House began with tea, blueberry jam and a sunny slice of perfection. Five masted schooners (tall ships) had anchored in the harbor overnight, disembarking 30-40 adventurers to prowl the village. The Lewis R. French, Heritage, May Day, Stephen Taber and Victory Chimes lent an air of festivity to our tiny harbor. Great hike today, even if I did bash my head halfway back into my neck on an overhead limb! We visited Thuya Gardens, coming into its beautiful world via the back gate, reached by hiking the Little Harbor Brook Trail up to an unnamed pathway up the backside of Eliott Mountain. Thuya is a hybrid of an English formal garden and a Japanese. Mesmerizing, and coming through the back gate was pure magic. The hike ended with a connector trail toward Jordon Pond and back Harborbrook to the car. Dinner was delectable crab meat from the C.H.Rich crab house, corn on the cob, whole wheat french bread dipped in fruity olive oil infused with fresh chopped garlic, basil and oregano. The crab was gently heated in a little local butter, lemon juice & Old Bay Seasoning. One day in our trip -- a quintessential Bass Harbor day! Close

I love the ocean! I could spend hours on the rocks listening to the waves pound the shore. This trip we encountered low tide so the waves weren't crashing, but the beauty of the coastline and the smell of the salt air was undeniable. While climbing down to get the rocky view of Bass Harbor Light, I stopped to take in the scenery. The pictures speak for themselves. Close
