Two hours away is Toronto. Lots to do, VERY large city. Might want to visit the CN Tower, which was the highest building in the world at one point.
Two and a half hours away from Barrie is Niagara Falls. That could easily be a 2-day adventure. A package deal was offered to see the butterfly museum, Maid of the Mist ride, Behind the Falls access, and free shuttle transportation. Also could spend a day at Marine Land (similar to Sea World). Lots of shops and fun restaurants. Niagara is BEAUTIFUL at night also, as they light up the falls with enormous lights that change colors.
Lots to do at the resort also. Swimming, hiking, biking, skiing in winter, sledding in winter, many activities run by resort, restaurant, golf, and playground. Also, the resort offers one free night that includes a bus ride to a casino and a big buffet. (Just $20 to reserve, and you get it back when you show up.)

Carriage Ridge (6288), the low end sibling of Carriage Hills resort, is part of the Horseshoe Resort complex, north of Barrie, Ontario. Highlights are the new condition of the units, the DVD players in the units and gas grills. Beyond that, the resort has little on-site except a mini-indoor pool and a few piece of exercise equipment.
Access to a children's play area requires a 15 to 20-minute walk along a dirt road to Carriage Hills. There was only one resort person on-site, the towel counter at the pool. He/she knew very little about resort activities or the surrounding area. She said to call the activities desk for info "and leave a message because there usually isn't anyone there."
We enjoyed our week nevertheless because there are a number of interesting places to visit in the surrounding area including the 30000 Islands in Georgian Bay, the Wye River Nature center, the murals in Midland, town of Orillia, and SainteMarie among the Hurons. There is a Saturday farmer's market in Orillia.
Overall feel is that of a nice apartment complex in a field. A standard resort; not a GC as rated by RCI. 6 on a scale of 10 as timeshare resorts go.

I highly recommend a quick trip into the IGA at Craighurst when you arrive. While not a huge grocery store, it did have everything we needed, from baby needs, to food, to hot lunches. And, of course, the liquor and beer store outlet that had more than enought fine wines, liquors and beers. Once again, the people were very friendly!Close
