José Eber is one of the most famous hairdressers of the stars. A typical haircut in Beverly Hills runs around $200. Why would you pay so much for a haircut? This is what I wondered.
I always read the LA Weekly to scour for special events. This is a great resource for those on a budget. There are free sneak previews all over the LA area announced in the Weekly or even special deals like training nights for certain salons. If you haven't heard of this beauty secret, you need to discover this tip. Famous salons have training nights when you can receive a great haircut for very little money. Some training nights offer free haircuts (extremely rare), others offer pay (rarer still), but most offer haircuts for $10 or more.
José Eber advertises their training nights occasionally, and they run around $35 for a cut, blow dry, and style. Your appointment will be LONG, lasting two to three hours. The reason why it is such a long block of time is that there is an apprentice stylist learning under an expert stylist. The expert stylist oversees the cutting to make sure that your hair isn't too messed up. You must know that these "apprentices" are not newbies. They are trying to leap into the next level, in which actors and socialites will want to become their clients.
My stylist was having a hard time understanding the concept. The head stylist kept scolding her. He chastised her about cutting in the wrong section, then snipped off a very tiny piece of hair. "See, you think this is nothing, but this completely changes the way her hair lies on her head," he said. I have never had a haircut as complicated as this. It looked like hair architecture, or maybe Hair Physics 101. Now I really understand why some hair cuts are only $10 and some are over $200. The cut I received looked great, even though the head stylist looked less than pleased with what the apprentice had done. It was still the best haircut I had ever had, and it grew out very well.
José Eber Hair Salon is located inside the Two Rodeo Drive Center. Parking is free inside the lot with validation. Phone: (310) 278-7646.
