Visiting Xian

One of six ancient Chinese capitals, Xian was an imperial hub for over a thousand years, not to mention a key stop along the Silk Route. Today, its business is mostly tourist-driven, thanks to two major attractions: the terra-cotta army of the Qín Bingmayong Bówùguan and the lovely Big Wild Goose Pagoda, one of China's most famous Buddhist sites. After dark, university students and visitors alike line up for dumpling buffets—a culinary highlight of the region.
