We stayed in Loertto Aprutino, 30kms east of Pescara. From here we went to the Market town of Penne (we went on Saturday). Food stands sell a selection of hot and cold food. Great hams and cheeses. Local crafts are available without being too touristy.
Find a coffee in one of the many bars, and do a bit of people watching. This is so good in Italy. Look up at the rooflines while you're there.
We then moved on to Citivella Casanova and finally ended up in Britoli. Here we found a great little bar run by locals who had lived in Canada. Enjoyed a bit of lunch and a drink and then moved on to Castel del Monte.
This place has a labyrinth of alleys and arches, small squares and the rest. Very picturesque.
Next we went to Calascio. This is a ruined castle and town which is being rebuilt. Walk around the ruins. Enjoy the magnificant views, the clean air, and the most delicious almond tart anywhere. The cafe is there you just have to look.
We then went back to Britoli for an evening meal, but we went via Capestrano, a bigger and more lively hillside town.
Breathtaking scenery and a million miles away from the city.
The important thing is, take your time, stop regularly, and soak up a bit of the ambiance. It is an unspoiled part of Italy.
