Early morning at 6.30 am, the morning arati or the first puja of the day is performed at the Natraja temple. The sun shines and the golden roof of the temple is aglow. The priests bathe and dress the idols to the chanting of sanskrit shlokas and the arati, the drums and a bell beat out a tune. There is a huge 150 ton bell made in Germany and is pulled with the help of levers. Another bell is perched on the roof and again a set of intricate levers ringing out a loud rhythm, making the moment contemplative and meditative. The arati over, it is time to apply ashes to the forehead, bow one's head in surrender to God and, energized, proceed to face the day. Close
