Caceres' Plaza Mayor is straight out of a movie set. You walk down the pedestrian shopping street and it opens up to this large square lined with cafes, restaurants, bars and hotels. And to your right, the breathtaking old town walls rising above it. Beautiful.
This is the meeting place in town. Each cafe has its outdoor seating which spills into the Plaza precariously where cars will pass. It is a traffic nightmare. There is one stop light at the bottom end of the square and no traffic lines to show that there is indeed a roundabout. But there is nothing but a flat plain of cobblestones - nothing to go around except two metal posts.
The Plaza fills up during the morning and empites out rapidly around 1:30 to show the starting of siesta. All is quiet and shut except for the bars which pump loud Spanish pop tunes and spill over with the university students. Then, as magically as they disappered the town comes back to life at 5pm, the Plaza a traffic nightmare of cars and motorbikes. Nap time is over.
The Plaza is the place to find cheap accommodation (see 'Pensione Marquez') and a place to sit during siesta. The cafes serve expensive jugs of Sangria (945 petas) and various tapas advertised on back lit fast-food-like marquees. There is one little patiserie with the most wonderful deserts. One note, Caceres has no night life within the Plaza. The cafes close early and all is quiet.
