If you’re idea of a Greek island holiday is a taverna and a bay, forget Kalamaki. But if you want a British holiday with sun, this is for you.
Kalamaki has one half-mile long street lined with souvenir shops, supermarkets, bars, and restaurants–all with giant TV screens with the volume turned up. All the restaurants have giant menus outside-all offering pretty much the same food and most offering the all-day breakfast. If you want an English pub, it’s there, as well as an Irish pub. Having said that, Kalamaki caters mainly for families, and as such, has all the amenities required, including a long 3-mile beach. But go that little bit farther, and there is an excellent taverna about a half-mile on the road towards Zakynthos Town (see restaurant recommendations).
The Kalamaki end of the beach is a protected area due to the nesting site of the loggerhead turtles, where crowds of the tiny baby turtles can be seen hurling down to the water in early season. As we were there in October, we didn’t get the chance to see them. Apparently the best time is between June and August. Because of the turtles, there are no water sports here other than the odd pedalo.
The beach is about 3 miles long. Unfortunately, there is quite a bit of litter. For swimming it is fine-quite shallow near the beach, so it’s grand for kids. But it's quite a long way out before the deeper water. At the other end of the beach is Laganas-the resort for the 18- to 30-year-old crowd with bar after bar, ideal for those inane bar crawls so popular with the idiotic British lager louts.
