Scaly Mountain doesn't even have a stop light but it does have Don's Plumbing and Grocery. If you are looking for "small town" America you"ve just found it at Don's.
A quick stop there gets you the gas you need to travel to the next stop on your travels...a little time wandering the aisles lets you know that mountain life isn't easy, even today. Plumbing, painting, electrical, fishing supplies. Emergency supplies for when your water is running more under your cabin than into your sink and Don will advise you how to fix it-if you are humble enough to ask...and are willing to listen.
More hardware than food. but there's a table where you can sit back and if you are open enough to really learn a little about the community, Don can fill you in. If he likes you (or maybe thinks you've reached the end of your rope after springing your umteenth leak) he'll may even lower the price.
This is where you get your burning license-and you better get one. But it's also where you can find out everything that's happening in the town-if you are willing to slow down. Slow down-isn't this why you came to the mountains? It's not easy for us city dwellers-it's even intimidating for those of us used to being in control.
The sign about the bake sale to help a family that's ill isn't hokey in the mountains-it's a tradition and a necessity-as are the gospel sing alongs. You really are welcome.
Are you ready to find what you thought you were looking for? If not, get your gas, pay at the register and travel on. You will never know what you missed. Or spend a little while at Don's and walk away with a real bargain.
