Riobamba comes alive on Saturday mornings as the mostly indigenous villagers from the surrounding areas descend upon the city. Not only confined to the plazas, vendors are set up everywhere along the streets, though some plazas have general themes, including the Plaza de la Concepcion where you can find many handicrafts. Just down Carabobo, along the train station, you will find the Mercado Condamine that is active all week long selling some meats, but mostly an incredible variety of fruits, vegetables, and fresh herbs. On Saturdays this market is even more impressive. The neighboring villages and towns all have their own market days, but Riobamba is the largest and draws the most diverse people. Not as great a shopping experience for tourists as Otavalo in the North of Ecuador, Riobamba market day is definately worth seeing for the colorful people and fun atmosphere.Close
