We went on this trip to spend Christmas away from home and to celebrate my 50th anniversary. We started the day with a breakfast at Puerto Vista, a small restaurant. The breakfast was simple, but you could have eggs and bacon (English) and a pastry. We had one glass of champagne to drink.
After breakfast, we went down to the heart-shaped island and waited for a helicopter ride. The fee was 50 euros each, but it was worth it. We had a 15-minute ride around the resort, over the town Arguineguin, up to the Vulcano mountain, over the village Mogan, down to the sea again, and up for a closer look at Puerto de Mogan and Puerto Rico.
Then we hit the road and had a drive in our rented car to Las Palmas for shopping. It was cloudy, and there was some rain, so we returned to the south again and did more sunbathing.
In the evening, we had a romantic dinner at Grand Bahia restaurant and grill (that's another entry).
We spent Christmas Eve at the resort. After a self-made breakfast, we rested at the poolside on a beautiful and warm sunny day. At noon, we went to Tapas Tapas for a light lunch. At 1pm Santa Claus arrived by air in a helicopter. Every…Read More
We spent Christmas Eve at the resort. After a self-made breakfast, we rested at the poolside on a beautiful and warm sunny day. At noon, we went to Tapas Tapas for a light lunch. At 1pm Santa Claus arrived by air in a helicopter. Every child who had paid for it could sit on Santa's lap and then got a present.
We had booked for a dinner at one of the best restaurants on the resort, Tropicana. There they had an international buffet with courses from all over Europe. We are from Norway, and we found smoked salmon and graved salmon.

I would do anything and everything to avoid the touristy mess of Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas, but a trip to the dunes is worth the stress surrounding it. We visited with our rental car, so that we could escape quickly if need be! We parked and walked into the dunes through one of hotels, and the first sight of the sand is incredible. We could just see the sea beyond and headed off in that direction. My favorite part of the dunes visits is running/sliding and jumping down the mountains of sand. The sand glides down with you, and it looks like water running.
At the shore, the dunes fall back and a beach appears, with people relaxing and swimming. We saw a couple with a kite and promised ourselves we would remember one next time. We stayed for a couple of hours, then went home.... sandy and tired!

With large prawns, inexpensive meat, salad ingredients, fresh fruit easy to obtain, even though we only had a two ring cooker we were able to produce good meals.
Wine is also cheap and plentiful.

The dunes of Masapolomas are an awesome sight. It is easy to make believe you are lost in the desert instead of on a resort island. Playa de Ingles is one of the party spots on the island. Most clubs don't get hopping until after my bedtime. Be advised that this is also the gay area. Many restaurants and businesses are marked by rainbow flags. The beachfront has plenty of cafes on the boardwalk for those that want to spend all day at the beach. Close

I recommend taking the boat from Anfi to Puerto Rico to Mogan. The crew is very friendly; offering free Sangria and lollipops on each part of the trip. Scenic views along the way. On a clear day you can see Tenerife.
Go on the first boat and spend the day in Mogan relaxing and eating.

The shopping mall is full of low budget restaurants and very tacky souvenir shops. Great place to go if you want to buy plastic or ceramic simulated body parts. Close

All the roads are where the free maps show them to be but there are restrictions at junctions which means you go round some roundabout to get back to where you were.

Gran Canaria is the largest and most touristic. You won't feel isolated there. Close
