Hiking is abundant and diverse in the Wet Mountain Valley: there is everything from a walking track in town, located just east of the school, to climbing 14,000-foot peaks. To the west, the Sangre de Cristo Range leaps into the sky. There are a multitude of trails to choose for a day's adventure. A guidebook, written by local bookstore owner Michael O'Hanlon, is available at Hungry Gulch Books. It has lots of good information written by the guy who knows more about these mountains than anyone. To the east are the Wet Mountains. There is lots of hiking available there too. Many of the trails begin in the San Isabel area, a mostly summer town on State Highway 165 north of Rye. In all these areas there is fishing so don't forget your license and your pole. Close
