Apart from being an increasingly popular tourist destination for Spanish holidaymakers, Puerto also has a large population of foreigners. First and foremost, US Naval Base Rota is situated only a few miles away. Unfortunately, Americans are therefore hard to avoid, but it is not anyway near as bad as Rota itself, and Puerto seems to escape the worst aspects of US military presence.
In addition to this, there is a healthy community of English-speakers making a living from English teaching. It is also a popular destination for Germans, who have bought lots of property in the province, although mainly down the coast. There are also many Latin Americans, especially Mexicans and Bolivians, as well as the odd Cuban. The most amazing group of foreigners must be the Scandinavians. There are two Scandinavian-owned schools in Puerto and many Swedes and Norwegians come to study Spanish. Due to their blond hair and red faces, you can usually spot them a mile away! With Spain being Europe's number one destination for holidaymakers and its popularity amongst young and retired foreigners, Puerto is an unlikely candidate for being the most internationally mixed small town in the region.
