From the Marktplatz of St. Gallen, the Abbey is a short but picturesque stroll through the heart of the city. Simply follow 'Marktgasse' from the square towards the towering twin spires, past the Church of St. Lawrence with it's 'Rainbow Roof'. The street will open into a walled courtyard where many people meet and spend their lunches relaxing on the welcoming grass. Here the 17th Klosterhof (Monastery Courtyard)protectively enwraps the majestic Benedictine Abbey, and once provided a peaceful environment for the scholors, leaders and clergymen of yore. More impressive than the exterior of the Cathedral is it's interior of Baroque artistry. Frescoes produced by Josef Wannemacher, stuccowork, and elaborate wood carvings adorn the walls and ceiling of the Abbey lending it a Sistine Chapel'esque' charm. Within the walls of the Klosterhof is a true literary treasure, the Abbey Library. It is one of the oldest libraries of the Western World, and contains historical masterpieces dating back to the 8th Century. In addition, it may be the most exquisite secular room of the Baroque period in Switzerland, combining Baroque and Rococo styling. These hidden gems are so historically significant, they are included on the list of UNESCO World Cultural Monuments. Close

Upon arrival in St. Gallen via the Bahnhof, a quick ride on the 'Marktplatz' bus or a relaxing stroll down Bahnhofstrasse, will plunk you in the heart of our 'Unexpected Beauty'. The trip will transport you from the modern glass buildings of the station to the historical center of an antique walled town. Once a cultural and textile center for middle Europe, many of the original Oriels--carved facades--of store fronts still exist and many depict scenes of the city's history. The Oriels were symbols of city pride and merchant wealth. After a day of travel on the train, relax and enjoy the scenery, regional cuisine and locally brewed 'Schutzengarten' beer. Close
