We were 150 miles from our home. And we had a relaxing time! Right on the Rifle River was a spot available to pop our tents. The sites were really made for RVs, but we could easily fit our three tents near the water. This time my mother came all the way from Toronto to camp with us. We noticed a small waterfall across the river right in front of our site.
We had just purchased wood from a farmer not far from the site, but it was wet and did not burn, so we had a cold fire that first night. I do not recommend the wood from farmers; just buy it from the campground. They sell it all the time and get the dry stuff. That first night I couldn't wait to curl up in my sleeping bag with my husband. At night, some neighbors were back from the bar and were pretty loud. We hoped they would be quiet the rest of the weekend, which they were. We managed to fall asleep.
The morning was chilly. We hurried and made another fire. We had a great bacon-and-egg breakfast with hot coffee. After we went to Au Gres and Omer (cities nearby). We stopped at a flea market, a small one with knickknacks for sale and cured wood. We also stopped at a DNR park and fished a little. I rid the river of some gobies but not much else. We returned to camp and had dinner. The night was not as cool and quiet. Our son did some kayaking in the grounds pond. Mom had a better night's sleep, too.
It was a warm, sunny morning on Sunday, and we sat on the edge of the Rifle River fishing. We also saw some wild turkeys land and approaching the river’s edge for some food. By 1pm it was 81 degrees.
We liked that campground. It is clean and has hot showers. It was also all decorated for Halloween. However, canoeing was closed for the season on the river--bummer
