Named after the castle located here centuries ago however, there are only castle ruins today to notice. The view from the restaurants up the hill is astonishing, especially when the sun goes down on the Aegean see. If there weather is clear, you can see the Greek island ‘Semadirek’ on a distance. Below the hill there is a bay surrounded by the only resort hotel of the island, Gokceada resort, a military vacation camp where the soldiers have their vacation with their families, and a small area where you can find fish restaurants, tea and beer houses, motels and pensions along the sea. This place is on the way to become a typical Turkish vacation destination. In the evenings souvenir stalls are opened and there are kiosks where you can supply your necessities for a perfect summer vacation. There is also a protected small area for fisher boats but there are plans to open a huge marina here. At the moments the place is affordable but prices will surely go up when Greek Yachts stop by. The road to Eski Bademli is so bad that you may consider walking up there in order to avoid unnecessary stress and enjoy great views. When you walk uphill, an empty school building will welcome you just like in the other villages. If you arrive during lunchtime there will be nobody on the streets, coffee house will be closed. The best option is to bring your own picnic and walk to the water source located under the monumentally giant tree located at the edge of the village. Here it is cool and shady even in the warmest days of the summer. Yeni Bademli, a newer village is built by immigrants from the mainland on the flat area below the hill of Eski bademli and a good option for accommodation. House pensions are substituted in this village and you can enjoy the real Turkish hospitality in these guest rooms, which are almost lost in many coastal resorts. Close

This tiny village was the biggest village of Turkey – once upon a time - located 14 kilometers west of the Centrum. You can see it at the spacious school building, which is completely empty and deserted today. The few kids in the village must go to another village for school. In front of the school building there is a giant tree where you can rest, just against it there is a Greek church, which is closed today. When you head up to the hill between half-broken-down houses you will end up in the central village and the coffee place named Barba Mimi. Elderly Greeks will inform you about what to see in the village, the glorious past and how sick is the village’s priest. They will smile to your camera even though they have enough worries in this village and almost no future perspective.
The building, which is used to wash the clothes once upon a time, is still intact even though nobody bothers to wash anything anymore. There is just the very cold water flowing in the buildings stony floor and a few visitors. There are tiny olive oil, soap, and honey producers in the village, which may be interesting to visit.

The locals of this village have left for mainly economic reasons to developed countries but they come back every year in fancy cars and fell the nostalgic moments. Most of the houses on this village have been repaired. In summer around 15 August is the big party time. Food is cooked collectively, people dance. If you came on another time no problem, the place of Barba Yorgo will give you an idea about how it is like.
Beware that this village is located on a terribly high hill and therefore may be challenging to reach by car. In the mornings local people are very active with cleaning their houses, cooking, doing some construction work. During the lunchtime everyone is indoors and it is rather more silent until evening breeze arrives. The central plain and the coffee house will be confusing to remind yourself whether you are in Greece or in Turkey.

You must be able to dive in order to get there as well as the necessity to rent a boat and get permission from the municipality to dive in the area. When you reach Kuzulimanı -- the port of the island by ferry there are rock formations on the coast, which are typical to this island. Varied landscape and rock formations is usual for this island where tectonic movements and the effect of fault lines passing through the island are visible as well as the effect of wind and water sources. It is surprising to see such a variety in a small island. Close

Southern coast of the island is sandy beach however it is difficult to reach Gizli Liman and Laz koyu. The best option is to visit the beach of Aydincik, which is not too far and reasonable to reach from the centre of the island. Behind the beach there is also a salt lake where the mud is rich in sulphur therefore claimed to be good for skin health. To be honest, it did help with me and my skin felt elastic and soft after a cure in the mud. There are also some cheap restaurants on the beaches for accommodation and there are parasols available for rent. Close
