There are a few alternatives while considering travel to Redang. Each form of transportation bears the pros and cons, of course. Before getting to the island, you may need to get to the capital of Terengganu, Kuala Terengganu. There are a few ferry/speedboat choices that bring travellers to the island daily.
FROM KL TO KUALA TERENGGANU
By plane: Both Malaysian Airlines and Air Asia fly to Kuala Terengganu daily; however, Air Asia is cheaper, but with limited flights and seats. A MAS round-trip ticket costs RM388.00 [adult] while Air Asia offers as low as RM19.90 for single trip (that's if you book really early or fly on off-peak hours). The flight takes 45 minutes.
By coach: There are a few coaches go to Kuala Terengganu. It costs approximately RM23.80 one way. Travelling by coach is recommended if you are not rushing for time as you will be travelled along the east coast, where you can enjoy beautiful scenery and experience the local village culture. The coach stops a few times along the journey at villages for tea break, so you might get a chance to drop by and experience what Malaysian local culture is like. The entire journey [inclusive of toilet break] takes 8 to 9 hours.
FROM KUALA TERENGGANU TO REDANG ISLAND
There are two standard ways to get to the island which depends very much on which resort you stay with. Most resort arrange for the boat transfer. Besides REDANG HOLIDAY VILLAS and BERJAYA RESORT, all other resorts use speedboats and depart from Merang Jetty.
If you chose to stay with Berjaya Resort or Redang Holiday Villas [the one I stayed at], you will be riding on a 200-seat boat that departs from Shahbandar Jetty near the POS OFFICE and MARKET in town.

To be honest, you're really dependent on your resort to get you there and back. If time is at a real premium, I would suggest staying at the Berjaya Resort, because they have their own private landing strip and flights directly to the island.Otherwise, you can drive/take a coach to the town of Kuala Terengganu on the mainland and book transport from there. (From Kuala Lumpur it's about 8 hours.)Or, if you book a resort in advance, they'll pick you up from Terengganu airport. Both Air Asia and Malaysian Airlines fly there. (I wasn't very happy with Air Asia, as they cancelled our flight back, causing us a lot of inconvenience, but in the end, we transferred to an MAS flight.) Travel Sickness: The resorts tend to use catamarans/speed boats, so take travel sickness pills. My wife, son, and best friend all threw up. (I've actually been on a lot worse sea journeys.)Close
