Ogunquit Beach is made up of white sand and is approximately 3-1/2 miles long but the width changes dramatically during high and low tide. You can walk about an 1/8 of a mile further when the tide is low. There are two low and two high tides daily at various times during the year. It is a spectacular sight to see how much the landscape changes between the two. During low tides, the water around Ogunquit Beach looks like a river but at high tide, it appears more like a lake.
Take advantage of the benches (dedicated in memory by many people) and sit and watch the ocean. If you are more adventurous, climb amongst the varying colour rock formations and examine small tide pools but be very careful that you are watching as high tide approaches. Many of the rocks are completely covered during high tide.
It takes approximately 20-30 minutes (1-1/4 miles) to walk along the Marginal Walkway from Ogunquit Beach to Perkins Cove. Thanks to local residents and donations, the Marginal Walkway was rebuilt after the heavy storms in October 1991. Make a donation at the lighthouse to maintain their beautification efforts.
The height of the tourist season occurs from May to October although a lot of the shops were open during April. The ocean is extremely cold during April but there were still a few brave surfers in their wetsuits. Not too much wildlife as we only saw one seal but a lot of seagulls and cormorants. None of the tour boats were operating in April.
Many of the shops were located on the lower levels of large homes or garages. The Revelations shop and Genesis Day Spa are located in what was previously a church with a bell tower.
Visit Kittery Mall’s 120 outlet stores for discount shopping nearby. See the harbour where they build submarines in Portsmouth and drive amongst the historical houses, some dating back to the 1600’s. Portland is approximately 40 miles north and Boston is about a two-hour drive south.

The quaint village of Ogunquit is a gorgeous place in summer, but has a character all its own in the winter. It is less crowded, a select few of the shops are open, but when the snow is falling lightly, and you are with special people, it is just beautiful. I highly recommend taking a trip close to home, and doing something you might not usually do in winter. It is a great experience! Close
