We left Bern early Sunday morning the 25th May 2003 and drove via Zurich, St Gallen, The Arlberg Tunnel (15.6km long), Innsbruck, Tyrol to Maria Alm. We stayed in Hinterthal in a typical Austrian Chalet. We arrived just before 14:00 before our German friends, Uwe and Uschi from Munich. We were unpacking when they arrived and it was great to see them. We were hungry and went to eat something and also explored the Marco Polo Alphina Timeshare Club with a great indoor swimming pool, restaurant, etc. Our unit had a small kitchen and we spent lots of time chatting and visiting. We also had a great view over the valley and heard the cows with their bells on the hills. We went to eat dinner at a restaurant in Maria Alm and I had a great Quatro Staggioni pizza. Afterwards we walked in the street and explored the incredible beautiful village.
Uwe and Uschi took us the next two days to Hallstadt (the most beautiful lakeside village in the world, just don’t ever make the mistake to order Styrian cheese like I did while the others ate little pancakes with wild berries), past some of the most beautiful lakes Wolfgangsee, Salzburg, and Uwe was driving all the mountain hairpin bends and even took us on roads we thought no car could go down lol. We did, although we had to back-up a little for another car that wanted to go up. We also visited Schonau and took the boat on the Konigsee to ST Barthloma Church. The guide blew his trumpet and we heard three echoes coming back to us. Echoes engraved in my heart. It was so beautiful. This visit to the St Barthloma Church in the beautiful National Park was a highlight for me of my trip to Europe. I had the most wonderful Spargels (asparagus) and great schnitzels in Austria. I even tried a bite of Uwe’s delicious liver soup. Uwe and Uschi also took Anton to see Berchtesgaden and we all could go into the bunker Hitler build. A place Anton could spent days, but unfortunately the museum closed early and the weather was overcast.
In the evenings late we went for a swim and I loved the water jet. It was the best time to relax before taking a hot bath and having coffee together before saying goodnight. Too soon the three days with Uwe and Uschi passed and we had to say goodbye.
We spent the day to visit Zell Am Zee and Kaprun. We loved the snow on the Alps and seeing some beautiful castles. I loved the shops in Zell Am Zee.
Wednesday night my pen friend of 17 years, Marjana and I met for the first time. They brought lots of red wine to celebrate and it was wonderful. Marjana’s boyfriend Alesch is a ski and dance instructor.I should have known this before and would have been a qualified skier by now. The next day we took Marjana’s CLIO (incredible we have the same car without knowing) to test the hairpin bends of the Gross Glockner Alpenstrasse with Alesch Andretti.
The most beautiful pass I have ever done and Marjana and I were scared to death in the back (think Anton in the front too); worth the dangerous hairpin bends and afgronde.
The last day together we visited Saalfelden and did the summer tabogorun. It was really great fun going up the mountain 1.6km with ski-lift and racing down in the taboggans. Marjana cooked us an excellent lunch of chicken with pepper sauce and salad she brought with from her garden. We really had fun together and we hope one day we will be able to visit them in Slovenija or they visit us in South Africa.
They left Friday afternoon at 16:00 and we went walking in the town, but went to bed early as the next day we had to leave to Italy.
