President Obama and his family are summering on Martha’s Vineyard this week, and though he's not the first president to vacation there -- Bill Clinton and Ulysses S. Grant visited the island in the past -- he may be the first president to golf there during an earthquake.

The island, which boasts a year-round population of over 10,000, is accessible only by plane, ferry or private boat. It gained its current prominence in the 19th century, thanks in large part to its popularity among whalers and convalescents. The movie Jaws was filmed in Edgartown, where Steven Spielberg made full use of the residents working as extras. (Incidentally, there have already been over twenty shark sightings off the coast of The Vineyard this summer.)

If you're looking for things to do on the island, here are a few of our members' favorites to enjoy your last hurrah.

Kriztie707: "The ferry from Falmouth to Oak Bluffs runs regularly in the Summer and is a great thing for families to do.”

Drhough: “Walking and biking are delightful on Martha’s Vineyard because the tapestry of the place demands an ‘up close and personal’ view.”

JenLara called Aquinnah Beach (aka Gay Head Beach) “really spectacular… just the beautiful calm water and the incredible cliffs for which this beach is famous.”
