Is any cathedral more iconic than St. Basil’s in Red Square? Undoubtedly Moscow’s most visited and photographed attraction, the landmark is celebrating its 450th birthday with exhibitions and celebrations this year. In 1990, the Kremlin, Red Square and St. Basil’s (now a museum) became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Commissioned by Ivan the Terrible, the cathedral is at the center of rumors about the fate of its architect. When Ivan asked the architect to build another cathedral – and he’d agreed – it’s reported that Ivan had his head cut off, telling him: “That, by heaven, you shall never do.” In another version of the story, Ivan blinded the architect, supposedly to stop him from rivaling St. Basil’s in later designs. Richard Meier and Frank Gehry, take note.

For member suartd, “St. Basil’s Cathedral is a must-see in Moscow. A trip to Moscow would not be complete without viewing this amazing sight.”
