Amusement park rides have come a long way since the classic wooden rollercoasters, swings, and Ferris wheels of the first theme parks. In 2011, expect to be twisted, lifted, spun, dropped, and more -- using heights, speeds, and technological twists you’ve likely never experienced. Here’s where to go and what to do.
- SkyScreamer and Windseeker at 6 North American Parks
This new-to-the-scene ride is a mash-up of swing- and tower-type rides, with a major difference in altitude: it swings around at knuckle-whitening heights of 150 to 300 feet in the air. It’ll debut as SkyScreamer at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in California and Six Flags St. Louis, while it’ll be called Windseeker at Knott's Berry Farm, Cedar Point, Kings Island in Ohio, and Canada's Wonderland in Ontario.
- Star Tours at Disneyland and Disney's Hollywood Studios
The Star Wars-themed simulation ride Star Tours is getting a 2.0 reboot in 2011, with a choose-your-own-adventure spin: all riders will have the power to change the storyline during the ride, resulting in a different journey each time. It’s rumored to open May 4th, as in “may the fourth be with you.” (Groan.)
- Green Lantern at Six Flags Magic Mountain
A never-before-seen vertical zigzag track is the highlight of this rollercoaster -- oh, and the fact that thrill-seekers get to hang in suspended trains that rock back and forth and spin them head over heels.
- Dare Devil Dive at Six Flags Over Georgia
What’s dubbed a “beyond-vertical plunge” is one of the jaw-droppers of this new rollercoaster, set to open on Memorial Day weekend. It’s not the first of its kind (Euro fighter dive coasters at Dollywood and the theme park inside the Mall of America are comparable), but it’ll be a major thrill nonetheless.
- Cheetah Hunt at Busch Gardens Tampa
Much like how the cheetah pulls off bursts of speed as it hunts its prey, this rollercoaster propels riders from speeds of 0 to 60 (all in a few seconds!) three separate times. And PS, if the lines are too long for the newbie, mcampos700 says the older ride, a floorless dive coaster named SheiKra, is “THE roller coaster” -- so check that out too.
