While I was on holiday this summer on the Greek island of Zante with my husband we managed to go on a couple of boat trips. Our favourite trip was the one that left from the beach at Laganas. This interesting trip involved looking for the loggerhead turtles in the sea and then seeing the Marathonisi Caves before reaching and stopping for a while on the uninhabited island of Marathonisi.
Both my husband and I thought that this trip offered excellent value for the price of €15 each and it was cheaper than the trip offered by our tour operators.
There were about a dozen passengers on the boat and we all got a good view out to sea.
It wasn't the best time of year to find turtles so we were all pleased to see one quite soon after starting off. I was actually surprised at how big the loggerhead turtles are. It was interesting to see the turtle come up for air and so then we had a great view.
After we had all been given enough opportunity to take our photos of these wonderful creatures, the boat’s captain started up his boat and we departed, leaving the turtle in peace.
Next we arrived at the caves and the boat was small enough to get right inside. The waters here were truly clear and beautiful. Some people were swimming inside the caves or snorkelling but the area wasn't too crowded.
We continued on our way and arrived at the beach of the island of Marathonisi. The water here was very clear and the sand was light in colour.
It was good that the boat was easy to get on and off from but the captain made it even easier for me by letting down steps which made it easy even for me to get into the lovely warm sea.
There were a few other boats here and people swimming in the sea but it wasn't overcrowded.
We had just under an hour here on the island and this was enough as after swimming it was very hot on the beach with no shade other than on the boat.
All passengers returned to the boat we and headed back to Laganas Beach.
During the return journey the captain stopped the boat and drew our attention to another turtle.
Altogether we saw three turtles on this trip which we found, from speaking to other trippers, wasn't bad at all for this time of year. By late August the turtles had mainly left these waters after laying their eggs on the surrounding beaches and would be travelling further away.
The boat was clean and looked good but it isn't large with facilities such as a toilet.
Passengers are told to remove their shoes before getting on the boat to help to keep it clean and in good condition. But for anyone like myself who cannot walk barefoot then beach shoes are acceptable.
For us this trip was just perfect.
